Portage Lake Project: A Japandi Lakefront Cabin

Welcome to the Portage Lake Cabin, a tranquil four-story retreat nestled along the shores of Portage Lake in Deerwood, Minnesota. This project embraces the essence of Japandi design, where Scandinavian simplicity and Japanese serenity meet to create a home that feels grounded, balanced, and deeply connected to nature.

Built into the landscape, the stacked floorplan celebrates both function and flow. Guests enter across a bridged walkway that leads into the main foyer, an architectural moment that sets the tone for what’s inside. On this entry level, the Owner’s Suite and Office offer peaceful retreat within the trees, with views that stretch out across the lake.

Just below, the heart of the home unfolds in an open layout designed for gathering. The kitchen, dining area, and great room flow seamlessly together, anchored by clean lines, natural textures, and a soft, organic palette. A four-season porch extends the living space toward the water, while a hidden pantry, laundry, and powder bath provide effortless practicality without compromising design.

Descending to another level reveals the home’s more social spaces: a family room and bar designed for connection, alongside a guest suite, exercise room, and full bath. Each space carries the same quiet sophistication, defined by custom millwork, warm wood tones, and natural light that filters gently through the home’s vertical structure.

Below it all lies an unfinished underground level envisioned for a future wine cellar and bar, an intentional nod to the art of slow living and the home’s ongoing evolution.

Every detail of the Portage Lake Cabin was considered to evoke a sense of calm and continuity. From its layered materials and purposeful forms to its seamless relationship with the surrounding landscape, this home embodies the Japandi philosophy: a celebration of simplicity, balance, and the beauty of living well.

Let’s design a space that resonates with your soul and provides lasting comfort for years to come.
